“Make the Most of Your Training by Resting”

Murphy’s Mantra – training tips from the desk of Coach Marie Murphy

After many athletes complete a marathon, their thoughts are not usually focused on their recovery. Nor are they focused on what they should be eating in the days and weeks after their marathon. In the excitement (and in many cases relief) of crossing the finish line, the thought of nutrition and exercise--although a key focus during training--often fall by the wayside once the goal has been accomplished. Yet the best way to take advantage of the effort you spent training to achieve your goal is to ensure you rest properly and eat right, beginning immediately after your marathon….

Coach Murphy publishes marathon training, running and general fitness tips in her “Murphy’s Mantra” column distributed periodically throughout the year. MBS Fitness also publishes FAQs on training topics. To submit a question, send it to info@mbsfitness.com. To view FAQs, please visit http://www.mbsrunner.com/community/faq/default.aspx. You will be asked for a your username and password. If you do not have one, registration is simple and free.

Successful Marathoners and Fundraising for Breast Cancer Research

Congratulations to all of you that have completed a marathon this Fall! I’d like to extend special congratulations to those that trained for and completed the Susan Love M.D. Marathon Training Program. In this program, athletes raised money for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, dedicated to preventing and eradicating breast cancer. Athletes in the program ran the Dublin City, Chicago and New York Marathons. And, although the number of participants can be larger, they raised almost $30,000 for the Foundation. Great job: Penny Foley, Tracy Thomas, Brett Rosen, Mitch Feinstein, Maggie Small, Suzanne Schweitzer and Susan Love. For more on the Foundation please visit http://www.susanlovemd.org.

Also, congratulations to Coach Murphy who completed the 25th Dublin City Marathon within seconds of the time she completed the first one in 1988. Coach Murphy placed in the top 15 women with the time of 3:03:02, in windy conditions. For more, please visit http://www.mbsfitness.com/main/in_the_news.htm.
